ULFA (I) denies involvement in bomb blast

GUWAHATI: A bomb blast rocked Goalpara in lower Assam on Monday, hours after the first phase of Assembly elections. Three people were killed and 25 injured including four policemen. The attack was carried out near the temporary election office of the BJP at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district. The bomb suspected to have been kept in a bag on the footpath near the BJP office adjacent to Dudhnoi traffic police point exploded at around 7.30 pm. The deceased were identified as Bapon Saha, Ajit Dutta and Dipankar Saha. The blast caused chaos and panic. Police had to cordon off the area. Two shops were also damaged in the busy market place.

ULFA (I) were suspected to have been behind the attack however, the group has come out and vehemently denied their involvement. In a statement, ULFA (I) stated that the blast in Dudhnoi in Goalpara was a handiwork of some unscrupulous politicians. Goalpara is among the 61 constituencies going to the hustings in the second phase on April 11.  Goalpara Superintendent of Police Nitul Gogoi had expressed his suspicions of ULFA (I) being behind the blast. The seriously injured persons were admitted in GMCH in Guwahati.
